Economic welfare is defined as the net benefits to all consumers and producers created through market exchange. However, economists now proxy economic welfare with measures of total spending such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Gross National Product (GNP), which are conceptually and compositionally distinct constructs. In fact the ‘Father’ of GDP accounting, Simon Kuznets who devised it’s formulation in the 1930s is quoted as stating that, “The welfare of a nation can scarcely be inferred from a measure of [GDP]." Yet paradoxically, this is exactly the way in which GDP is used today across popular and academic circles alike.

Can controversies over the use of ‘Keynesian’ government spending programs to smooth the business cycle be resolved with a more holistic understanding of what GDP in fact ‘is’. Is it the case, as economist Charles Goodhart famously stated that, “Any measure [like GDP] which becomes a target, loses it’s usefulness as a measure”? Under what circumstances is GDP actually an appropriate measure of economic phenomena, where does it in fact break down in its present use, and finally, how could we in practice construct a superior measure of welfare to benchmark economic performance?

During this month-long Internship you will conduct original research on the formulation and measurement of economic welfare as proxied by GDP. Collaborating with your fellow interns, you will investigate and more deeply understand this fundamental economic concept, and with your mentor's guidance you will co-author an academic research paper on this topic for publication. No previous knowledge of economics or statistics is required to participate.

Ecosystem services such as pollination, pest control, nutrient cycling, water purification, food provision, and flood control are essential for sustaining human existence and well-being. However, many of these services are not commonly provided by the private market as a result of intrinsic challenges to market efficiency such as strategic free-riding, lack of information, and high transaction costs. As a result, the natural environment is not properly  maintained or funded, and where ecosystem service provision is remunerated, it is almost exclusively via external sources such as government grants or charitable donation.

Nevertheless, the emerging field of private provision of ecosystem services represents an opportunity to tap new funding sources for improved environmental conservation. This internship will examine the theory of the private provision of public goods and research existing empirical studies of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES). This research will determine the practical feasibility of achieving fully private PES, and which forms of intervention can maximize conservation outcomes.

During this month-long Internship you will conduct original research on the private provision of ecosystem services. Collaborating with your fellow interns, you will learn how the application of economic principles can provide novel solutions to environmental problems, and with your mentor's guidance you will co-author an academic research paper on this topic for publication. No previous knowledge of economics or environmental science is required to participate.

Recognizing and navigating cultural nuances in negotiations is pivotal for building trust, establishing effective communication, and ultimately, reaching mutually beneficial agreements. A nuanced understanding of these differences enables businesses to adapt their strategies, demonstrate cultural sensitivity, and enhance relationship-building, thereby contributing to more successful multi-national partnerships and the promotion of a more prosperous national economy.

During this month-long Internship you will study negotiation theory and research how cross-cultural differences can affect the outcome of negotiations. Collaborating with your fellow interns, you will research the complexities of cross-cultural negotiations, and with your mentor's guidance you will co-author an academic research paper for publication. On completion of the internship you will have gained valuable insights on how to effectively broker any deal - from Tokyo to Timbuktu. No previous knowledge of negotiation theory or business is required to participate.

As of 2023 there are over 3 billion gamers worldwide, with some valuing the gaming and Esports market at over $197 billion. With such a wide reach the law can no longer ignore what has now become a central part of so many people’s lives, especially young people. Furthermore, as technology develops and gaming moves to a new era of more ‘immersive’ gaming, a lot more is at play, legally. Legal questions about the impact the gaming industry has had on current intellectual property laws and competition law, can no longer be avoided, and new protections of gamers’ personal data need to be put in place.

Scholars have noted how for the benefit of both the gaming industry and consumers, ‘improvements in gaming access and quality should be encouraged, not derailed’. Yet, some providers of video games can easily be described as dominant, in that they have (or are close to having) the ability to control both the new and old ways of gaming. This, gives rise to a tricky balance for competition lawyers and competition enforcement agencies to navigate and to the question of how much intervention is too much? Moreover, the way in which gamers’ data is collected and used has drastically changed as new ways of gaming are developed. This has led governments to introduce new laws and guidance to game developers to help ensure that gamers’ data is protected and that data protection laws are complied with, whilst allowing for user experience to be enhanced according to users’ needs. Of course, different governments have approached these concerns differently. Ultimately, there is much to learn from each approach in this area where technology, which changes at such a rapid pace, plays such a crucial part.

During this month-long Internship you will conduct original research on the law covering the gaming industry. Collaborating with your fellow interns, you will critically engage both with intellectual property law, competition law and the new field of law and technology, and with your mentor's guidance you will co-author an academic research paper on this topic for publication. No previous knowledge of law or legal theory is required to participate.

Recent years have seen the rise of various political movements demanding independence for their territories. The most prominent examples being in Catalonia (Spain), Scotland (the United Kingdom), and Quebec (Canada). These secession demands are framed under the right to self-determination, that is, the right of a people to decide on their collective future. This situation has raised the legal question: if the majority of the population in a territory want independence from their state, should they be entitled to hold a referendum on the issue and secede? On this internship, you will conduct research to explore the varied positions within the secession debate.

Public international law only recognizes a general right to self-determination for colonial territories. However, there is a lively scholarly debate on whether this right should be extended to non-colonial territories such as Catalonia, Scotland, Quebec, and others. Advocates of this position often invoke the democratic principle, asserting that national boundaries should be subject to change by democratic majorities. On the other hand, opponents invoke the principles of state sovereignty and territorial integrity, which they view as fundamental components for maintaining the stability of the international order.

During this month-long Internship you will conduct original research on secession law. Collaborating with your fellow interns, you will critically engage both with public international law and constitutional theory, and with your mentor's guidance you will co-author an academic research paper on this topic for publication. No previous knowledge of legal theory or international law is required to participate.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a sophisticated tool in the data sciences to address complex human problems. Having surpassed human experts in trivial applications such as games of Chess and Go, AI now has ever expanding applications in advanced applied research and commerce including; algorithmic trading, self-driving vehicles, medical decision-making, and military strategy. However, what will the future hold for Artificial Intelligence? Which applications are indeed viable, which will remain hypothetical, and what unexpected areas might we in fact see AI successfully applied. Are the dystopian sci-fi portrayals of AI as eventually replacing humans justified, or will AI continue to expand mankind’s economic opportunities without supplanting the need for humans entirely?

During this month-long Internship you will be taught how Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning work. Collaborating with your fellow interns you will then conduct original research on how AI is currently being applied to domains of commerce, and will examine its potential to replace human intelligence across other fields in the future. In addition, with your mentor's guidance you will co-author an academic research paper on this topic for publication. No previous knowledge of computer science is required to participate.
